The Real Wheat of India : Khapli Wheat

Khapli wheat, also known as "Farro Wheat" or "Emmer Wheat", has been a staple food for India. Unlike modern wheat varieties, Emmer wheat is a "naturally-occurring" grain with high nutritional value. Its unique and nutty flavour makes it a versatile addition to various dishes. Emmer wheat is also an eco-friendly crop that promotes sustainable agriculture.

The earliest evidence of cultivation of this super grain Khapli wheat comes from neolithic site of Mehrgarh in unified India. (6000-5000 BCE). Khapli is a hulled wheat which means the husk completely encloses the grain.

Khapli is a hard wheat, long & dark brown in colour. Traditionally grown in Southern Maharashtra, Northern Karnataka & parts of Saurashtra region of Gujarat. It have been the staple of the natives in this region.

What is Khakhra? 

Khakhra is a popular Indian snack usually made from whole wheat flour, which is kneaded with spices and herbs and rolled out into thin flatbreads or rotis. These flatbreads are then cooked on a griddle until crisp and golden brown. They are also widely prepared and gluten free millet flours and legume and daals.
